Web Design
"He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end."
- Ecclesiastes 3:11
- Ecclesiastes 3:11
This class will build on what was learned in Graphic Design 1 and 2. Students will spend each term creating a website to a specific theme. We will explore different webdesign sites and use our experience of them to compare and contrast.
Assignments
Self-Portrait Webpage
|
Use this video to learn about different parts of the WEEBLY platform before starting this week's assignment.
|
Assignment 1 :: Self Portrait Webpage |
Guidelines for Webpage |
Create a website that will be a type of self-portrait.
Use Weebly as your platform, so you will need to use your email to create your own login. At the end of the week, you will turn in your domain as your finished product. You can publish your site whenever you need in order to check how things look (it will automatically create a desktop and mobile version, so look at both to make sure you are happy). |
|
Assignment 2 :: Travel Blog Website
For the next few weeks we will be tackling a few different types of websites and at the same time trying out different website building platforms at the same time. The GOAL will be to compare the platforms at the end to decide which one has the best functionality.
For now, we will be using free website builders. For this project you will need to set up a profile on https://www.wix.com/ Once you have a profile, go to "website design", "edit your own" and choose "blog site". There should be options here, so choose "travel/food" and use one of their templates as a starting point for this project. |

guidelines for blog website
This website needs to be a blog website documenting your favorite place in the world. For me this would be England...hence the picture above. You can literally choose anywhere...it can be a specific town or it could be as big as a country or even as vague as "the ocean". I am going to give you some creative space here, but please be mindful of not disclosing personal information.
The goal is to tell the viewer about a place that has importance to you and to get them to want to go there themselves. Include plenty of images and even videos if they are relevant, but do not forget to cite. BEFORE starting, take a look at this website and read through some helpful guidelines for web design :: https://elementor.com/blog/principles-of-website-design/ |

Portfolio Website ::
|
This is a super long video, but it has a lot of great info on it. You can fast forward as needed or go back, but here are some basics of WordPress.
|
For this project you will need to set up a profile on wordpress.com
This week we will use WordPress to create a PORTFOLIO type website to document actual artwork you have created. Set up your profile and make choices that best fit a PORTFOLIO style in your opinion.
You can use works you have already created, both graphic and non-graphic. For non-graphic work you will need to work with the sub to create a set up with good lighting to photograph using camera. I also want you to create new artwork for the site over the course of this week. This can be a combination of photography and graphic design work.

Guidelines for Portfolio Website ::
- At least 5 pages (one landing page to tell viewers basic information about artist--YOU; and then at least four others...three will need to be three different TYPES of art. So you could have a page entitled “works on canvas”, “photography”, “graphic design”, etc.
- There should be a clear theme throughout the the website
- At least one outside link
- Artwork pages must include at least 5-10 pieces per page
- Gallery style viewing on at least one page
- One page of artwork should NOT be gallery viewing and should be thoughtfully arranged with explanations next to work
- Create a logo for yourself or signature and use it throughout the website
Comparison Website ::
Create a website using your favorite free web builder (it does not necessarily have to be one we have used) to compare and contrast the free web builders that we use in this class. We will be adding on to this website as we use other sites, so make sure it is something that has space for growth.
Web builders that you need to include to date ::
Web builders that you need to include to date ::
- Weebly
- Wordpress
- Wix
Here is an example of a website that compares website builders >>>
Look at a few different comparison websites to get a feel for how they lay out the information, and decide what format you want to use for your website. You need to design a clear way to grade the websites--grading each website on the same 5 elements. The elements you choose to grade are up to you. (An example might be :: maneuverability or free themes) |
Your comparison website needs to include ::
- Clear parameters on how you graded each site
- An overall grade for each website
- Actual links to each web builder
- A blog style page on the pros and cons of each web builder (so overall you should have at least 4 pages...a home page that compares at a glance and then one page per web builder that goes in depth)
- A clear design theme throughout
